If you have been injured or are ill, you might be wondering if you can get disability benefits. In many cases you should be able to get some kind of benefit to help you with your financial needs while you are unable to work, however, there are some instances where you will not be approved for disability benefits. Here are some reasons you might be denied.

1. The Injury Isn't Long Term

In order to get approved for disability you have to be able to prove that the disability is a long term problem that you will be dealing with for a good deal of time. For instance, if you break your foot and need surgery and cannot work while it heals, you may not be able to get disability benefits through government programs. If you have private insurance you might be able to get coverage for the injury while you are out of work, but unless the injury is something that will affect your ability to work for the rest of your life, or at least for the foreseeable future, you will most likely be denied.

2. The Condition Is Caused From An Addiction

If you struggle from alcoholism or a drug addiction, and this addiction caused the injury or illness, you cannot get disability. This is because the programs cannot pay for benefits for a person who could have prevented the problem with a life-style change. There will be test ran and there will be medical history examined before you get the benefits. Thus, if you know that you cannot pass these tests because of an addiction that you have had for years, it may not be worth filing a claim.

3. The Injury Doesn't Fully Prevent You From Working

If you can still work with your injury, even if you can't do you same job, you may not be able to get disability. For example, if you worked in a warehouse and hurt your back, but you can still easily work at an office job, you will probably be encouraged to go and find employment that fits your current situation. You may be able to get some kind of help with unemployment while you go through the process of changing careers, but so long as you can still work some kind of job, you will probably be denied benefits.

By understanding reasons why you could be denied benefits you can determine if you have a good chance of getting approved for disability.
